Puducherry, still widely called Pondicherry, was the capital of French India until 1954. Its White Town has French street names, colonial villas, and bougainvillea over yellow walls, while the Tamil quarter across the canal has temples, markets, and old Tamil houses.
It's an easy, slow place: walk or cycle the grid, watch the sunrise over the sea, and take a day for Auroville and the beaches to the north and south.

- The town's rocky seafront isn't for swimming; use beaches with lifeguards and follow flags.
- Heat
- Even in winter, midday is hot. Explore mornings and evenings, and rest in the afternoon.
