Chikkamagaluru (often written Chikmagalur) is where coffee first took root in India, according to the legend of Baba Budan. Today the hills around the town are covered in coffee and pepper estates, many of which welcome guests in homestays.

Most visitors come for slow mornings on an estate, sunrise from Mullayanagiri, and drives to waterfalls and viewpoints. It's about 5 hours from Bengaluru by road, which makes it one of the best 2–3 day escapes from the city.
